A West Coast IPA showcasing a brilliant combination of Nelson Sauvin’s white wine–like fruit character and luscious, resinous flavours.
[Character]A clean and crisp IPA, pale in colour with a dry finish. This single-hopped beer features Eggers Nelson hops, a specially produced variety of New Zealand's flagship, giving the beer a passionfruit, overripened sweet tropical fruit character, with a dank resinous backbone.[Food Pairing]Grilled white fish with herb and lemon, charcoal grilled chicken, cottage cheese and green apples[Naming]If IPAs were considered to be a show, there's no denying that the star of it is the hops. Normally it's more like a blend - a band, if you will - of multiple hops performing together. For this series, however, it's a solo artist - a "Hop Idol", showcasing their individual talents on the big stage. Who would you vote for? The star of this show is Eggers Nelson, a special strain of Nelson Sauvin produced at Eggers farm, offering a different and more intense tropical fruit character than typical Nelson.[Brewer's Voice]The next hop to enter the spotlight in our hop idol series is Nelson Sauvin, but this is no ordinary Nelson (and thus the name!). We have specifically chosen to feature Nelson Sauvin grown by Eggers hop farms. Their Nelson Sauvin is unique in that it takes on more of a resinous and tropical passionfruit character, in addition to the citrus and white grape Nelson is more usually associated with. It is quite amazing the difference in character you can get from the same plant grown in different lots or different farms, and this highlights the importance of hop selection, something that we have only been doing for the last couple of years.
For the Hop idol series, we craft these beers to best feature the characteristic of the hop, and for this one we took the “less is more” approach. With a hop that has plenty of nuanced character in addition to bold flavours, we didn’t want to muddle that with an overly complicated base beer. We went for a West Coast-style IPA, consisting of Northstar Pilsner, with a little White Wheat. This gives the beer a little body, while keeping it light in colour and offering a crisp dry finish. This was fermented out with Pineapple Passion yeast for just a little tropical yeast ester on top. West Coast IPAs really are great for allowing the uniqueness of the hops to shine through, unmuddled by the hazy, and are super repeat drinkable, with a clean, simple profile whilst offering that moreish hop flavour.
