While most English style beers have a long history and tradition, the next we have created here is a modern style that breaks the traditional English beer mold. We were asked by the Kyoto Racecourse to make a beer inspired by the Queen Elizabeth II Cup race. This got us thinking about what would be a suitable English style for the still warm late Summer/early Autumn period in Kyoto. English beers are typically known for their malt flavour, being rich, with typically darker colors, caramel notes, and a subdued hop character, but that isn't quite the case any more. This summer British Golden Ale goes a much different direction, focusing on a refreshing drinkable beer even in the hotter seasons. This beer has a light golden hue, still brewed with English base malts of Maris Otter and Golden Promise, but instead of darker caramel malts, this beer uses a small amount of wheat and dextrin malt, keeping the colour light while adding body. There has been a recent trend of even old more classical English breweries breaking from their traditional hop usage, by using American hops alongside English hops to give the beer a brighter citrus and more floral character, enhancing the aroma and making it come across in a brighter way. For this one, we went with East Kent Goldings hops to add some more familiar English hop flavours while being complimented by Saphir, Sterling and cascade hops, for their brighter citrusy notes. Finished with an English ale yeast, this beer blends soft cracker malt sweetness and bready English esters, with citrus, floral, and herbal hops that take the spotlight. This is a beer that we were very excited to brew, as we love the blending of styles, and giving traditional beers a fresh take through combining a little bit of old with new.
