A refreshing sweet and tart blend of berries form the base of this deliciously refreshing sour ale
[Character]A fruit ale fermented and conditioned on a blend of berries, giving the beer a purple hue with a sweet and tart finish. Full of flavour and freshly picked, is there a better way to enjoy fruit? We couldn't quite find a translation into English, but felt Very Berry, while not the most original, gives an image of something packed with berry character, which this beer has aimed to do![Brewer's Voice]Summertime brings berry season, so there was no better time to brew a beer with berries than now. To kick off the summer fruit season we have brought back our popular berry sour from last year, Tsubutsumu. This time, however, we felt we could do it better. Feeling that we could leave a bit more sweetness to balance the acidity, and that the beer would benefit from some more mouthfeel, we made a fair few adjustments!
We wanted something more smoothie-like in its mouthfeel, and so went a bit heavier on our malt base, mixing it with wheat for more creaminess, and made sure the beer had more unfermentable sugars that would stay in the beer rather than drying out. We used some Meridian hops for berry and flower aromas before adding the big flavours from the huge berry blend that we added. A mix of blueberries, blackberries, and marionberries were first added, with then a mixed blend including sour cherries, strawberries, blackcurrants and raspberries contributed more wonderful aromas. With the berry mix being very sharp to begin with, we let all the sourness come from them, and the juicy berry character along with the deep purple colour make this a truly appealing refreshing break from the summer heat.
