渾然一体 (Chromatic Fusion)

A pale ale that gives you the full impact of Freestyle's Tropical Fusion, a special blend of high impact hops, themselves created through expert cross-breeding.

[Character]
This hazy and very hoppy New Zealand Pale Ale features Tropical Fusion from Freestyle, a pellet mix of multiple hops brought together for supreme tropical impact. We used a mix of Maris Otter and cereal grains including corn, oats, rye and wheat for a soft pillowy mouthfeel, providing a great base for maximising the fruity flavours and aromas.
[Food Pairing]
Grilled vegetables and hummus, carrot rapé infused with dry fruits, fried white fish with yuzu tartare sauces.
[Naming]
Produced on Freestyle's vast hop farm, this beer's defining ingredient is Tropical Fusion, a unique and unusual blend that comes together to form its own harmony, evocative of a vast array of warm tropical colours.
[Brewer's Voice]
Last year we did a multi-brewery roulette featuring Peacharine hops, a variety developed by New Zealand producer Freestyle's advanced breeding program. We thought it went so well that we decided to bring it back, this time featuring Freestyle's trademarked Tropical Fusion. This was one of the most impactful hop products we smelled during hop selection, featuring tons of citrus and tropical character, with huge aromas. This hop pellet is made from a curated blend of hops grown by Freestyle in a single block on their farm, consisting of Riwaka, Southern Cross and Motueka.

As we had done for Peacherine, the involved breweries spun a wheel to select the beer style, supporting hop, and wildcard ingredient for each beer. We ended up with Hazy Pale Ale, NZ Cascade, and cereal grains. We were quite pleased with this combination, and the beer came together quickly from there. The recipe starts with a Maris Otter base malt, and from there we leaned into our cereal grain requirement, adding just about every single one we had available. This includes Torrefied Wheat, Flaked Corn, Flaked Oats, and Flaked Rye. This gives the beer a nice haze and distinct body, adding creaminess and light spice to the malt while keeping it light in colour. The NZ cascade was used to bitter the beer via a mash hop addition, and added again into the whirlpool. We saved the Tropical Fusion for where it could make its biggest aroma impact by adding it into the dry hop, accompanied by some more NZ Cascade, with a little Riwaka and Nelson to round the combination off.

At 5.5%, this beer is incredibly sessionable, with huge amounts of tropical hop character. We did not hold back on the hops on this at all, so this beer punches above its weight class in hop profile, rivaling many IPA’s in that regard. Because of the limited lot size of this hop and how desirable it was, this hop was available in very limited quantities to brewers. So come give it a try while we’ve got it, because it won’t be around long and there is no more available!
