[Character]Southern Hemisphere hops come together in this intensely hopped light lager, offering up a medley of rich tropical fruit flavours and aromas.[Food Pairing]Pan-fried white fish with lemon butter sauce, mussels and spinach gratin, Chinese stir-fried shrimp vermicelli[Naming]New Zealand is a paradise for much wildlife, and the diversity of bird species there is something truly to behold, each of which offering a unique and vibrant appearance. The hops grown there are equally unique and vibrant, and of an exceptional standard, and we wanted this series to reflect this. We hope you enjoy this journey to the Southern Hemisphere as much as we do![Brewer's Voice]In the last couple years, we have adopted more New Zealand hops into our portfolio. New Zealand hops have become all the rage recently, even in hop producing areas like the West Coast of the US, and with good reason. With a very distinctive tropical and fruity profile, these hop varieties lend themselves to all sorts of wonderful hop-forward beers. This New Zealand style pilsner takes inspiration from our Anniversary NZ pilsner, Naminamito, but uses a new blend of hops from the Southern Hemisphere. The base of this beer uses our new very clean tasting North Star Pilsner malt, with a touch of golden naked oats for body. The beer has a straw-like light golden hue and, with a hop load akin to an IPA, the beer has a slight haze from the sheer amount of hop oil present. On the hot side, we had only a whirlpool addition, with Kohia Nelson and Riwaka focusing on aroma and flavour while keeping the bitterness very low. A very heavy dry hop gives the beer its signature tropical character, with a blend of Riwaka, Motueka, Nelson Sauvin, and Peacharine. Lastly, even more hops were added in secondary with Maui Nelson and Waimea making an appearance.
The overall result is that this beer has quite an incredible array of tropical notes. Up front on the nose, there is sweet candied citrus, with melon and strawberry, supported further by touches of pineapple and guava lingering in the background. The flavour of this beer is reminiscent of grilled pineapple, with a deep sweet lightly caramelized sugar flavour followed up by strong tropical notes. While the beer is technically a Pilsner with its clean lager fermentation and lower alcohol content, the hop character is as impactful as an IPA. Despite the hop load, the drinkability is really what this beer is about, and it feels like a little slice of summer in the winter cold.
