A British-inspired ale with a perfect blend of roasted coffee and deep malt character
[Character]An English-style brown ale brewed with Kyoto roasted coffee, and offering aromas of hazelnut, chocolate, and notes of toffee.[Food Pairing]Pulled pork sandwich with plenty of melted cheese, apple and caramel tartine, chocolate fondant[Naming]The original meaning of a "Sharaku", or "Sharakumono" is essentially the character or personality in a public place who gets attention through their being an entertainer, whether simply funny, a good storyteller, or generally charismatic. This type of person is exactly the type you might find in a British pub, creating atmosphere at the bar, and so we felt this a good fit for such a beer, which we hope will be enjoyed casually, and with plenty of witticisms shared over it![Brewer's Voice]We revisit the Sharaku series with an English-inspired Coffee Brown Ale. The base beer is crafted around a classic recipe focusing more on nutty and toffee flavours, with a hint of chocolate, rather than sweet caramel. A blend of light to medium roasted and kilned malts contributes flavors of walnuts, macadamia, and pecans. A light addition of English Fuggle hops adds a light woody flavour and soft bitterness. This beer was fermented with a dry English yeast to give the beer a crisp finish and keep it light on the palette,balanced by biscuity yeast esters. With a cold steep of coffee in secondary, this beer marks our second collaboration with Coyote Coffee. The very knowledgeable folks there helped us select a roast and blend of beans to accentuate the roasted nutty flavors of this English brown. The coffee is very present on the nose, but melds with the beer in a way so as you can't quite tell just where the coffee flavour stops and the malt flavour begins. This was all about complimenting the natural flavours than overpowering them. This required close attention to when the coffee was added and how long the beans were allowed to soak.
