毬男 (Mario)

A Belgian yeast and heavy-hitting hop combination, this Double IPA focuses on pushing the fruitiness of Citra and Simcoe hops to the max.

[Character]
Citra and Simcoe came together in this very hop forward Double IPA. When paired with our house Belgian yeast, Simcoe takes on a pineapple flavour in this beer that is complemented by Citra’s own tropical fruit character. With a touch of sweetness added by the caramel malt, whilst still maintaining a dry finish, this beer is surprisingly easy to drink despite its ABV, while delivering a fullness in body to match its impactful hop character.
[Food Pairing]
Lemon and herb-infused roast chicken, white wine steamed mussels, Thai-style sweet-and-sour spicy pork.
[Naming]
It is somewhat of a coincidence but this beer shares the name of a famous plumber. It also happens to share its style with our year-round beer, Ichii Senshin, while happening to also be stronger in alcohol as well as using more hops. In short, we see this beer as being a kind of big brother to Ichii Senshin, with the name coming from “Marihana” (a less commonly used but more descriptive word for hops; “mari” literally meaning “cone” and “hana” meaning "flower”) and “O”, a reading of “otoko” or “man”. Without wanting to sound too cocky, this is a beer that we feel can match up to another very popular older brother.
[Brewer's Voice]
Big brother Mario returns this year, bigger than ever. Belgian beer is known for its yeast driven flavors, while beers from the West Coast of the USA are known for hops. This beer and this series has always been an exploration in when those two worlds collide. While many aspects of this beer return as before, this Citra and Simcoe focused Belgian IPA has over 30% more hops than previous years. We kept a similar base with pilsner malt and about 20% wheat with just a touch of biscuit malt for a little golden colour and malt depth. A blend of T-90 and concentrated T-45 hops were used in the dry hop to pack in even more hop oils. This gives the beer its pine and citrus aroma up front more akin to a classic West Coast style IPA. On tasting, it follows up with more of a tropical citrus flavor consisting of notes pineapple, guava, and melon. The fruity Belgian yeast esters compliment the fruit flavours nearly disappearing into the fruit character of the hops. The beer has a medium level of bitterness with a light golden colour and a dry crisp finish. One of the boldest in the most hop forward in the Mari-family of beers, this one showcases 2 of our favourite hops in a delicious yet drinkable combination.
