A Belgian White IPA with a smooth wheat mouthfeel and tropical character from the New Zealand hops
[Character]This Belgian White IPA has a light-colored hazy appearance, with a bright flowery and tropical citrus aroma thanks to the New Zealand hops that blend with the fruity Belgian yeast esters. Large amounts of wheat give this beer a soft mouthfeel, providing a base for the notes of grapefruit and lime zest from the hops. Low bitterness and both clean and dry finish, this beer remains incredibly drinkable.[Food Pairing]Cold potato and herb soup, salmon and cream cheese quiche, pork shoulder cutlet with a "ravigote" (sharp herbal dressing) sauce.[Naming]Cousin of Mario and Mariko, Marino is well versed in tea ceremony and flower arangement. While she might be a lady of few words, and with an appreciation of tradition, make no mistake that Marino is still very much the active type. With a thirst for culture and a love of travel, Marino's hunger for learning is only equalled by her desire for new experiences.[Brewer's Voice]Marino is a White IPA, meaning we needed a lot of wheat added (50% of the grain bill to be exact). We used a blend of both flaked and malted wheat, giving the beer a very light color and a nice haze from the wheat's proteins, giving the beer the “whitish” appearance that the style name alludes to. This high amount of wheat also gives the beer a soft mouthfeel and plenty of body, despite the dry finish. This heavy wheat malt profile pairs well with citrus, which is why you traditionally see Wit beers with orange peel, for example. As a result, when it came to selecting hops for this beer, we wanted to lean in that direction, using Motueka for its lime-like character. Along with Motueka, we used a little Waimea, adding some grapefruit flavours to the mix, with an underlying flowery aroma. All of this pairs well with, and is tied together by, our Belgian yeast, adding its own fruity esters to the mix.
